Contrary to popular belief, Adam and Eve did not have perfect fellowship with God in the garden of Eden. They did live in a perfect environment, but the life God had given them was that of a subordinate spirit.
"Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual." (1Cor. 2:12-13)

John the Baptist told Herod it was not right that he married his brother's wife and Herod put John in prison for it. I suppose John may have felt Jesus would've come to his rescue. After all, he was the very present prophet who, in the Spirit of Elijah, had prepared the way for Jesus' ministry. And Jesus did claim to be the Messiah, the Savior of Israel.
